A Letter From A Beloved Missionary

Dear Dr. Davy,

Greetings in the ever living name of Jesus!

I just returned back from a month long trip to Burma, Tibet, Nepal and Allahabad, India.

How are you?

I cannot describe in words, nor I have enough words to express my gratitude to God for His glory and the wonderful, amazing leading of the Holy Spirit that accompanied and led me to some of the harshest and difficult mission fields.

I had the WONDERFUL privilege of bringing the Gospel to more than 150,000 people in the past one month and I am sure that the Gospel came to these people for the first time. Many remote regions heard the first missionary foot-steps.

I witnessed some of the poorest of poor people I had ever seen. 20 days I spent among the most primitive of lands. It seemed I was living a world centuries back, places that have never seen even a wheel.

20 people groups, 134 distinct language groups heard the Gospel. As I went and probed deep in the jungles of Burma, the mountains of Nepal and Tibet, I saw a variety of people groups, some of whom, I am sure the world has not heard about.

I am just in the process of penning down the most fascinating, the most dangerous and tiring experiences I had ever in my 10 year span as a missionary. I will soon send it to you with some amazing pictures of crusades, and meetings.

I also visited the Kumbh Mela at Allahabad, India, the largest gathering on earth, where an estimated 40 million have taken a dip on the banks of the river Ganges and tomorrow, another 40 million are taking a bath on a single day at the same place! They believe that the sins of 100,000 years of the lives, which includes their thousands of their past lives (hindus believe in re-incarnation) will be washed away if they took a dip in the Ganges river, a river which they believe flows from the head of one of their 33 million god and goddesses.

I was there during this event for three days, and did what I could do to open the blindness the devil has given them. In a small way, along with a team of 40 of our missionaries, we could distribute 200,000 pieces of tracts and witnessed personally to 22 people. And the immediate harvest, 2 precious souls of two hindu godmen whom I met on a train. I enclose their picture. These two godmen after hearing the Gospel saved me from the crowd of sword-wielding sadhus who ran after me when they saw me distributing tracts.

We are gong again on the 15th of February, hoping that we will have around 2 million tracts and Gospel packets. The Kumbh closes on Feb 22. Please pray that finances will be raised for the purchase of these tracts from Bible Society. We are also printing some 100,000 tracts with whatever resources we have. Pray that we will have the finances to get these tracts in 7 languages.

We now have the first Arabic missionaries ready. This is a tremendous event about which I will share soon. They are leaving for a location in the Arab world in February.

It is such a joy to share with you about the amazing things God is doing to show His mercy to the utterly lost, about the wonderful comfort and leading of the Holy Spirit. The past 30 days were an experience of knowing deeply the heart of God. My inner man was greatly strengthened. "That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man." (Ephesians 3: 16). As I saw the Holy Spirit with me, as I heard him speak to me, I was filled with a boldness I cannot describe, as persecution raged in places, I stood to the ground knowing for sure that the Holy Spirit is right beside me, right inside me and that I was in the His will. At times when I was tired, and thought of returning home, it was His comfort, the soft, tender comfort that prodded me on, from mountain to mountain, village to village. One day, I just could not go on. He would say, "Jacob just one more village on that mountain, only if they could hear about Jesus. They have never heard His wonderful name. …if only one family in that village could hear about Jesus, then they will spread the Gospel around. It’s only a five mile walk. God will demonstrate His power, if you would go. You can do it."

I am just so fascinated by the Holy Spirit. "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities..) Romans 8:26. The Holy Spirit understands us so well. He enters our pain to comfort us. It is so important to be led by Him. "For as many as are led by the Spirit, they are the sons of God." Rom. 8:14.

Every time, I felt persecution rising, as the devil and his demons tried to thwart what I was trying to do, it was the mighty Spirit of God that raised a standard. "…When the enemy shall come like a flood, the Spirit of God shall lift a standard against him." Is. 59:19.

Please pray for more laborers, for God’s plan of mercy to be fully worked out. Pray for the resources that are need, finances to train the first-fruits, finances to send missionaries in, projectors, medical aid, educational equipment etc. We are planning to go in again in March and bring in from there 74 people, one from each village in Nepal, Burma, and Tibet for missionary training. Pray also for the finances needed to print and translate Bible portions and teaching manuals.

I also greet you on behalf the entire Grace Ministries team here. We are praying that God would establish through you His Kingdom in a powerful way this year. I believe this year is a year which belongs to the Kingdom of God. God’s Kingdom is going to spread in an unprecedented way. We are living in crucial and critical times, very close to the Lord’s coming.

A few Interesting notes from my diary:

Burma: Deep in the jungles of Northern Burma, there is a region called Som. In just 100 square kilometer area, there are 62 villages and each village has it’s own distinct language. Majority of the people from villages have not spoken to people from the neighborhood villages for decades because of the language barrier. Fights between villages are common. It was a great challenge to bring the Gospel to these villages and a great challenge lies ahead in translating Bible portions in these languages. There is a common language though but is understood by only 5% of the population of each village. Village populations vary from 700-1200 people.

Toilets are made at the edge of a cliff. A wooden plank having a hole, hangs out on the cliff. It was a amazing experience, sitting there out in the open. The plank would creek dangerously.

In one people group, the dead are put on the terrace of houses for the vultures and birds to devour. The bodies stinked so much but it does not bother the locals. After the body is eaten or decomposed, the skull is then hung on the door to ward off evil spirits.

Foreigners are not allowed to many places inside Burma. There is also heavy restrictions on Indian side of the border with permits required from the army to enter North-east India. I managed to sneak in with help of some locals.

China-Tibet border: In many mountain villages, I saw hundred per cent illiteracy. A barter system exists through which trade is carried on with adjoining villages. Fire is made through an interesting traditional way through the use of wood powder and stones. There are no medical facilities. Infant mortality rate is very high. More than one hundred children died in just two months in a village having 1800 people. Each family has 8 – 13 children. 8 was the minimum number of children I saw in a family. There is no educational facility. Children are initiated into agriculture as early as 10.

One whole village of 2000 people were massacred by the Chinese army two years back. I visited this deserted village.

INDIA: A group of thousands of naked sadhus, high on addiction were the first to take the dip in the Ganges on the auspicious occasion to wash off their sins. Some of the stunts they did was to pull a jeep with their genitals. Last Kumbh hundreds of sadhus were killed when they attacked the robed sadhus over the right to take the first dip. Hundreds of Americans, Mexicans, Europeans throng around these sadhus to know about the path to Moksha (Salvation). These sadhus generally are high on narcotics all the time.
